So that you miss as little as possible even when it's dark, the standard-fitted Headlamp Assist activates the lights automatically. Bi-xenon headlamps with the Active Light System, dynamic range adjustment, headlamp cleaning system and cornering light function are available as an optional extra. The Active Light System follows your steering movements and improves illumination of curves by as much as 90%. If you like, the standard-specification fog lamps can apply a cornering light function; it is automatically activated at speeds of up to 40 km/h when the vehicle is turning or cornering and you operate the indicators, or on tight bends.

The - also optional - autonomous intelligent cruise control system DISTRONIC helps you to maintain your distance to the vehicle travelling in front; it operates in the speed range from 30 to 180 km/h. The system slows down your vehicle at a rate of up to 2 m/s2 where necessary, and also accelerates again to the preset speed. In the event of a danger of skidding – for instance if the road surface is wet – the driving dynamic systems, especially tuned to the rear-wheel drive and four-wheel-drive 4MATIC, can help the driver stabilise the vehicle once again. As soon as the sensor system detects a critical driving dynamics situation, the engine output is adjusted and one or more wheels are braked in a targeted manner. ESP® and the electronic traction system ETS work in unison with the brake assist system BAS and with ASR, the acceleration skid control system. An ESP® trailer stabilisation system is also installed as standard.
