The "secret" of the V6 engines in the E 230, E 280, E 350 and E 350 CGI models lies in the sophisticated technology package. By way of example, all four camshafts benefit from variable valve timing across the entire engine speed range, thus ensuring high torque even at bottom-end revs. Furthermore, fuel consumption is reduced thanks to optimised combustion, while a balancer shaft ensures smoother running.
The 6-cylinder petrol engine under the bonnet of the E 350 CGI uses piezo injectors which inject the fuel directly into the combustion chamber. This improves mixture formation, resulting in virtually complete combustion with low pollutant emissions. The engine’s 215 kW (292 hp) are delivered seamlessly, with torque peaking at 365 Nm.
(E 230: fuel consumption: 9.6–9.9 l/100 km, CO2 emissions combined: 229–237 g/km; E 280: fuel consumption combined: 9.6–10.0 l/100 km, CO2 emissions combined: 229–239 g/km; E 350: fuel consumption combined: 9.9–10.4 l/100 km, CO2 emissions combined: 236–248 g/km; E 350 CGI: fuel consumption combined: 8.9–9.4 l/100 km, CO2 emissions combined: 213–224 g/km)[1]
