Virtually no other area inspires us to produce consistently impressive results more than safety. We passed an important safety milestone during the 1950s with the development of the passenger safety cell, an invention by Béla Barényi. Today it is just one of many components of our safety concept, which edges us ever closer to our vision of accident-free driving.
The integrated safety concept classifies automobile safety into four phases: to ensure a safe drive the vehicle helps the driver to identify critical situations promptly and handle them safely – including with the help of the standard-fit ATTENTION ASSIST and optional radar and camera technology which looks far ahead and monitors the vehicle's environment. If the sensors register a critical situation such as a reduced distance to the preceding vehicle they warn the driver. In the second phase, in the event of danger, numerous preventive measures can be activated to reduce the risk of injury. For example, automatic brake actuation can even prevent a collision. In the event of an accident, the occupants can benefit from effective protection provided by the comprehensive range of passive safety systems. After an accident further measures come into play, e.g. to facilitate easier rescue.
